This module explores the representations of memory in the contested arena of the public space. With a focus on the analysis of the role played by monuments, exhibitions, museums, and graffiti in both national and other kinds of collective memory, the module leads students to develop their critical understanding of contemporary debates about the place of controversial historical events, periods, and personalities. Providing insights about the role of the past in an ever-changing present, this module departs from situated examples from the pluricontinental space of the Portuguese-speaking world as a departure point from which to reflect on this transnational and translinguistic phenomenon.
