Description Placement Year (2): The student will spend eight months in a country like New Zealand undertaking a vocational placement with a research organisation, government authority or university department between October and April of the following year. Following discussions of the environmental concerns in these countries prior to the placement, the student will prepare a 2000 word discussion paper critically examining the main environmental issues in that country and examine methods that are being used to mitigate these problems. Effects on the economy will be addressed and, where appropriate, comparisons made with knowledge of approaches to similar problems in the UK and the EU. This report will be due in week 10 of the first semester. The second aspect of the module will involve the write up of the findings from the project that the student has responsibility when carrying out the placement. This will be in the form of a 8000 word report that critically analyses the data and places the work in context of the literature, including recommendations for future areas of investigation. This report will be due by May 15 of the placement year.
Learning Outcomes By the end of this module the student should be able to:
  • Work effectively as a member of a project team to carry out focused investigations; undertake an independent piece of research work that integrates their ability to design a sampling programme to fulfil the objectives; critically evaluate environmental information; gain experience and understand the scope of environmental issues in another country within a totally different geographical region; critically compare these issues with problems discussed in the UK and the EU; critically assess the results of previous research; make original observations; present data clearly and concisely in the form of text, maps, diagrams and other illustrations; appreciate the limitations and success of their placement
