Description This module aims to provide students with the unique experience of living and studying for a year in a country outside of the UK and of thereby broadening and enhancing their undergraduate education and subsequent career opportunities. Students will prepare for the module by developing a sound knowledge base in the academic subject and, where appropriate, by taking modules in the relevant language during Years 1 and 2. They will be supported before and throughout the year-long module by tutorial guidance and assistance dedicated to students who take this option. This Year 3 module will be taken at their chosen overseas where students will normally take 120 credits equivalent (=60 ECTS) based on module assessments. The allocation to the university abroad is based on student preference and availability of places as defined by the International Office. This year is taken on a pass/fail basis. If the module is passed, they will graduate with a degree in “BA/BSc Geography with year abroad”; the mark does not contribute to the overall degree classification. Subject to satisfactory attainment of the programme regulations, students will progress to the final year (Year 4) at Birmingham. If students fail this module they will automatically transfer onto 0176 BSc Geography or 0893 BA Geography as appropriate. The students may opt to top-up with additional language courses. Students will experience normal teaching and learning methods at their host continental university while retaining regular contact with Birmingham.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to:
  • Develop in-depth understanding with respect to one or more areas of contemporary human geography and environmental processes
  • Appreciate how science is approached in another country and in the context of another educational system
  • Improve personal transferable skills and
  • where appropriate, have proficiency in another European language.
