Description This module aims to provide students with the unique experience of living and studying for a year in a European country of their choice. That experience should broaden and enhance their undergraduate education and subsequent career opportunities.

Students will prepare for the module by developing a sound knowledge base in the academic subject and, specifically, by taking modules in the relevant language during Year 1 and 2 at the University of Birmingham. They will be supported before and throughout the module by tutorial guidance and assistance dedicated to the students who take this option.

This module should be taken in Year 3 and it requires study at a chosen university in Continental Europe. The students will normally take undergraduate academic courses at the host university and will submit an essay at the end of the module. The students are required to take at least 4 full courses related to their academic subject for their year abroad. The students may also take some alternative courses (subject to tutorial advice) and may opt to top up with additional language course provided by the host university.

Students will experience normal teaching and learning methods of their host university while retaining regular tutorial contact with the University of Birmingham. Subject to satisfactory attainment of the programme regulations, students will progress to stage 3 (Year 4) at the University of Birmingham.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to have proficiency in another European language and should be able to learn the relevant academic subject when it is delivered in that language. The student should also have improved knowledge in the academic subject and improved learning skills. The student should understand the context of another educational system and acquire knowledge of another cultural environment.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions The assessment will be made through normal assessment procedures at the host university (e.g. oral and written examinations, class tests, computer lab assessments, etc.) that will appear as 60% of the final mark for the year abroad. The essay will contribute as 40% to the final mark for the module. The final mark for the module counts 6.25% to final average mark.
