Description This module addresses questions to do with the nature of history and historical knowledge. Topics covered include the the philosophy of history and major schools of history. This is not a standard history module with a defined chronological/geographical focus, but a broader reflective module designed to aid independent thinking and reflection by students.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Show understanding of how the discipline of history and the historical profession has evolved over the past two centuries;
  • Show understanding of the major schools of historical thought and how they have influenced the historical representation of the past through writing and other means;
  • Critically asses the work of at least one major historical school in relation to the wider development of the subject and communicate their findings effectively in writing.
