Description This module will provide an introduction and overview to the range of qualitative research approaches and methodologies employed in mental health research. The module will address both the theoretical and practical dimensions of a range commonly applied qualitative research methodologies, exploring data generation and data analysis. The module will also address meta-synthesis and review approaches with a narrative and qualitative focus, emphasising understanding and interpretation from existing research findings. The module aims to equip students with the requisite skills and knowledge to both evaluate and apply qualitatively informed research approaches in multiple mental health contexts.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically evaluate theoretical and practical dimensions of commonly applied qualitative research methodologies.
  • Critically appraise and interpret existing qualitative research findings.
  • Apply qualitative methods of analysis such as meta-synthesis and systematic review to mental health data.
  • Design theoretically and practically informed designs for qualitative research studies in mental health contexts.

60% In course assignment: coursework: reflective essay, research proposal; grant proposal; video proposal; 2000 words
40% In course assignment: self-activated timed (45-60 minutes) examination- (e.g. SAQ or MCQ)

Reassessment:

Resitting of any examination-based assessments using an alternative question assessment.
Resubmission of coursework using an alternative coursework assessment question.
