Description This module will provide an introduction to, and an overview of, the range of quantitative research approaches and methodologies employed in mental health research. The module will address both the theoretical and practical dimensions of a range commonly applied quantitative research methods. The module will also address case control studies and clinical trials specifically, with an emphasis on understanding and interpretation. The module aims to equip students with the requisite skills and knowledge to both appraise and apply quantitatively informed research approaches in multiple mental health contexts.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically evaluate published literature, analyse, and interpret data and devise areas for further study using quantitative methods
  • Critically appraise clinical trial and case control study research
  • Critically evaluate ethical standards and principles in relation to mental health research across the lifespan.
  • Generate theoretically and practically informed designs for quantitative research studies in mental health contexts.

40% In course assignment: self-activated timed (45-60 minutes) examination- (e.g. SAQ or MCQ)

Reassessment:

Resitting of any examination-based assessments using an alternative question assessment.
