Description The LI Further English for Academic Purposes module covers IELTS English qualification level materials and provides students with the skills they need to meet the UoB IELTS requirements to a minimum level of 6.0 overall and 5.5 in each band.

Students will be supported at different levels dependant on their year one LC English for Academic Purposes (EAP) module results. The levels offered will be as follows:
Level 1: For students whose average LC EAP score is less than 50.
Level 2: For students whose LC EAP score is between 50 and 60, and who haven't yet achieved 6.0 overall in IELTS.
Level 3: For students whose LC EAP score is over 60 who wish to obtain 6.5 in IELTS.

All students who have not already achieved the required UoB level of IELTS will be required to take the official Cambridge IELTS exam by end of the second semester. In order to prepare for this exam, at the end of the first semester a mock IELTS exam will take place. Students will be grouped in the second semester according to the results in the mock exam. The mock exam will not contribute to the final module mark. The final IELTS score will be converted to a Jinan University/University of Birmingham score for the purposes of passing the module and for inclusion in the final transcript.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Speaking: Have developed presentation skills and interview strategies
  • Reading: Be proficient in skimming, scanning, intensive and extensive reading
  • Listening: Be proficient in listening for gist and listening for detail
