Description This module aligns to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives Domain 3 and Domain 4 and will enable learners to develop an in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge relating to the systematic examination of the newborn, to assess normality, detect abnormalities and provide health education to parents to meet newborn and infant health assessment (NIPE) requirements. Learners will study anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, genetics, genomics and medicines related to the care of the neonate, as well as the impact of inequalities on health and wellbeing, to enable them to support effective care of newborn infants. Successful completion of this module will allow learners to undertake examination of newborn infants in practice to demonstrate proficiency 6.59.2 \"full systematic examination of the newborn infant in line with local and national evidence-based protocols\" within the MORA. Opportunities to continue to develop academic study, leadership, research, and teamwork skills will be provided using Enquiry Based Learning.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically apply comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of newborn infants to identify normal characteristics, deviations from normal, congenital abnormalities and risk factors
  • Critically evaluate the midwife's role in the promotion of screening programmes and the evidence base for newborn and infant physical examination screening, to determine their effectiveness in clinical diagnosis and health promotion
  • Utilise effective, systematic communication and clinical and diagnostic skills to obtain, record, interpret and evaluate relevant information when undertaking a simulated newborn and infant physical examination
  • Confidently articulate clinical findings and justify management plans to parents and the multi-disciplinary team, including referral as appropriate
