Exclusions
Description The module aligns to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives Domain 4 and will introduce learners to key concepts, policy, and professional, ethical, and legal practice related to caring for women, childbearing people and newborn infants with complications and additional needs. This includes understanding how to work effectively in partnership with those requiring additional care, as well as the role of the midwife as a colleague within inter-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary and multi-agency teams. Learners will develop their knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology related to pre-existing and emerging conditions and will consider other key factors that may necessitate additional care to optimise outcomes. Skills in identifying, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care will be examined to include first line management, referral and follow up and some emergency situations. Learners will continue to progress their research and application skills through enquiry-based learning and will reflect on their performance and identify their own development needs to optimise their impact as aspiring midwives.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically evaluate ethical, legal, political and professional issues related to the provision of additional care and the impact of the midwife on women and childbearing people's experience, their choices, and their consent.
  • Appraise and apply knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, epigenetics and pharmacology related to complications and additional care needs for women and childbearing people, the developing fetus and newborn infants
  • Demonstrate skills in identifying, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care, to include first line management, referral and follow up.
  • Locate, critique, evaluate and apply a range of evidence to inform the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care and support plans for women, childbearing people and newborn infants with additional care needs
  • Using a reflection-in-action approach, self-reflect on professional development needs and formulate an action plan to address this
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

Reflective case study with action plan (4000 words) (90%)

Assessment of evidence of student engagement with enquiry-based learning) (10%)

Reassessment:

Learners will resubmit failed component(s)

1. Reflective case study with action plan (3000 words) 90%
2. Evidence of student engagement with enquiry-based learning, to include any additional evidence supplied (10%)

All reassessments will be capped at 40%.
