Description The module aligns to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives Domain 1. As the first module of the programme, study skills and the role, scope and context of midwifery practice locally, nationally and internationally will be introduced. Learners will explore the benefits of midwifery care and the impact of policy, practice, UN sustainable development goals and the context of women's lives on the health and wellbeing of women and childbearing people globally, and in the UK. Professional regulatory, legal and ethical theories and frameworks for midwives will be reviewed and learners will consider the importance of working in partnership with women and childbearing people, of adopting a human rights approach to care, of being an advocate and of challenging substandard practice and structural inequalities throughout the childbirth continuum, and within interdisciplinary and multiagency teams. Learners will be introduced to enquiry-based learning in this module and will be supported to identify research questions and to locate and apply evidence to inform learning.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Evaluate the impact of cultural and societal expectations, ideology, policy, research and healthcare provision on the health, wellbeing, participation and achievement of women and girls globally and nationally, with reference to UN sustainable development goals 3 and 5
  • Know and understand the concepts and principles that support individualised care choices that respect diversity, culture, and individual preference and locate and evaluate a range of reliable evidence sources to inform their application to practice
  • Interpret and apply professional, regulatory, legal, ethical and rights-based frameworks which support and direct midwifery care in the UK
  • Understand the importance of a supportive and nurturing environment in enabling midwives to offer holistic, person-centred care, and evaluate the mechanisms by which this can be achieved.
