Description This module aligns to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives Domains1,2,3,4 and 5. Through engagement with a virtual midwifery caseload, learners will develop confidence and capability in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care as an autonomous midwife working in partnership with women and childbearing people, with midwifery colleagues and across wider maternity services. Learners will develop skills such as time management, prioritising, escalating care and delegating tasks safely, problem solving, creative thinking and team working. They will use evidence, clinical reasoning and decision-making tools, knowledge of psychosocial factors and related interventions, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology to analytically and systematically formulate, and justify, safe and effective, personalised clinical decisions. Learners will utilise reflective processes to consider their learning and professional development needs and aspirations post registration to enable them to effectively lead and manage midwifery care. By engaging with a virtual caseload, learners will continue to develop and enhance their digital literacy.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically evaluate the impact of midwifery care that is relationship-based, trauma informed, inclusive, non-discriminatory, non-judgmental in safely and effectively meeting the short and long term needs of women and childbearing people, their newborn infants and families.
  • Understand and critically apply the principles of evidence-based, integrated assessment, complex care planning and evaluation as a leader and member of multi-disciplinary, multi-agency teams, in order to meet physical, mental, emotional, social, religious and cultural care needs, in partnership with women and childbearing people.
  • Critically evaluate, synthesise and apply detailed knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, policy and research evidence, in order to analytically and systematically formulate, justify and defend safe and effective, personalised clinical decisions.
  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of pharmacology and the effects of commonly used medicines in pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period; to include allergies, drug sensitivities, side effects, contraindications, incompatibilities and adverse reactions
