The module aligns to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives Domain 1,3,4,5 and will enable learners to extend and consolidate their knowledge and understanding of complex, emergency and critical care of women, childbearing people and their newborn infants. Learners will critically analyse, evaluate, synthesize and apply evidence, theoretical frameworks, policy, service models and clinical and biological knowledge to continue to progress their skills in critical thinking, clinical reasoning and advanced clinical decision-making. The module will support learners to build confidence in the recognition and assessment of emerging risk and clinical complexities, appropriate leadership, referral, advocacy, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to ensure optimal outcomes. Learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of pharmacology, safe and effective prescribing, administration and optimisation of medicines and medical devices across the childbirth continuum ensuring that they are able to progress to a prescribing qualification following registration. Using enquiry-based learning, learners will be expected to independently identify research questions and to demonstrate discernment in the location and application of evidence to inform learning.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Critically evaluate the assessment and assignment of risk, and its impact on the maternal-fetal dyad, care choices, consent and the experience of women and their families
Demonstrate understanding and discernment when applying guidelines, evidence, ethical and legal frameworks to support and justify clinical decisions and actions when responding to complex, urgent and emergency situations
Critically apply knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, epigenetics and pharmacology to woman and childbearing people, their fetus or newborn infant experiencing complex additional needs, critical illness or emergency care and identify and respond to the factors which positively and negatively influence outcomes, in order to inform and enhance quality midwifery care
Demonstrate effective judgement and leadership in response to complex and unpredictable situations, ensuring timely referral, escalation and collaboration with the interdisciplinary, multiagency team
Critically analyse and evaluate the principles of safe and effective prescribing, administration and optimisation of medicines and medical devices, to include the use of midwives' exemptions, demonstrating knowledge and understanding of underpinning pharmacology and pharmacodynamics.
