Description This module aligns to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives Domain 5 \"Promoting excellence: the midwife as colleague, scholar and leader. Students will have the opportunity to further develop and consolidate their scholarship and leadership skills by conducting a self-directed project and, in doing so, demonstrate autonomy in learning. Learners will deepen their knowledge and understanding of critical enquiry and research as a means of promoting excellence in practice by critically exploring a topic of professional interest related to midwifery practice. They will then produce an extended piece of written work as a final year project. Learners will have the option to present their project via a range of options to demonstrate module learning outcomes.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate requisite independence, autonomy and scholarly skills to determine an appropriate focus, plan and self-manage a project to completion, that includes engaging actively in the supervision process and in presenting a well-structured final project
  • Demonstrate proficiency and discernment in the critical appraisal, analysis, evaluation, synthesis and application of a carefully selected range of appropriate sources to enable logical and justifiable conclusions to be drawn and sound recommendations to be made that are capable of informing and enhancing midwifery practice.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of how research and enquiry contributes to the professional knowledge base for midwifery and the improvement of services for women, childbearing people, their newborn infants and their families
