This module aligns to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives Domain 5 \"Promoting excellence: the midwife as colleague, scholar and leader. Students will have the opportunity to further develop and consolidate their scholarship and leadership skills by conducting a self-directed project and, in doing so, demonstrate autonomy in learning. Learners will deepen their knowledge and understanding of critical enquiry and research as a means of promoting excellence in practice by critically exploring a topic of professional interest related to midwifery practice. They will then produce an extended piece of written work as a final year project. Learners will have the option to present their project via a range of options to demonstrate module learning outcomes.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate requisite independence, autonomy and scholarly skills to determine an appropriate focus, plan and self-manage a project to completion, that includes engaging actively in the supervision process and in presenting a well-structured final project
Demonstrate proficiency and discernment in the critical appraisal, analysis, evaluation, synthesis and application of a carefully selected range of appropriate sources to enable logical and justifiable conclusions to be drawn and sound recommendations to be made that are capable of informing and enhancing midwifery practice.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of how research and enquiry contributes to the professional knowledge base for midwifery and the improvement of services for women, childbearing people, their newborn infants and their families
Use appropriate strategies to communicate project findings to a specialist audience
