This module aligns to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives Domain 2 and 5 and will introduce learners to the concepts associated with midwifery continuity of care(r) and working as a colleague and leader. Learners will be assigned a virtual midwifery caseload comprising authentic case studies and will assess, plan, implement and evaluate virtual care according to the needs and preferences of women and childbearing people. Learners will be supported to locate, evaluate and apply evidence to cases and will consider safe care using evidence to support understanding and decision making. They will develop their skills in problem solving, creative thinking, decision making, leadership and multidisciplinary, multiagency team working to improve the quality of the care they provide in the virtual setting and in clinical practice. Learners will utilise reflective processes to facilitate continuous service improvement, their own professional development and that of others. By engaging with a virtual caseload, learners will enhance their digital literacy.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Understand the benefits to women and childbearing people, their newborn infants and families of midwifery continuity of care models in providing personalised care and care planning.
Consider the diversity and context of the lives of women and childbearing people and how this can inform, support and assist in meeting their individualised needs and preferences
Interpret a range of clinical information to observe and establish physiological adaptation across the childbearing continuum and use this knowledge to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care
Employ skills of appraisal and analysis of contemporary policy, guidelines and research evidence to formulate and justify personalised clinical decisions and actions.
