Description This module aligns to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives Domain 2 and 5 and will develop learners critical understanding and application of the concepts, principles, frameworks and factors that support effective midwifery continuity of care(r). Learners will continue to develop their skills in problem solving, creative thinking, decision making, leadership and multidisciplinary, multiagency team working to improve the quality of the care they provide in the virtual setting and in clinical practice. Learners will be assigned a virtual caseload comprising authentic case studies and will assess, plan, implement and evaluate virtual care according to the needs and preferences of women and childbearing people. Learners will utilise reflective processes to facilitate continuous service improvement, their own professional development and that of others. Learners will be supported to locate, critically evaluate, and apply appropriate evidence to cases and will consider safe care in the absence of good-quality evidence. By engaging with a virtual caseload, learners will enhance their digital literacy.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically evaluate the holistic ways midwifery and maternity care can be organised to meet diverse physical, social, cultural and religious care needs safely and effectively
  • Critically evaluate personal contribution within interdisciplinary and multi-agency teams, across different service configurations and models of care, to optimise the support available to women, childbearing people and their families
  • Develop effective and safe plans of care using skills in problem solving, creative thinking and leadership that recognise and take account of the personalised, context driven needs and preferences of women and childbearing people, their newborn infants and families
  • Employ skills of critical appraisal, analysis and evaluation of contemporary policy, guidelines and research evidence, supported by appropriate reference to anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology, to systematically formulate and justify personalised clinical decisions and actions.
