Description This module aligns to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives Domain 1, and 5 and promotes professional excellence in practice and a personal commitment to global midwifery aims for safe and enriching care for women and communities served by midwives. Learners will critically evaluate the ways in which enhancement and advancement of midwifery practice can benefit individual woman and childbearing people, their partners, wider families, and newborn infants. The module will develop strengths-based approaches and explore success as a midwife through reflection on personal strengths and professional career planning, capitalising on interest and intent. Professional regulatory, legal and ethical theories and frameworks, as well as contemporary contexts for practice will be critically reviewed against midwifery specialist, leadership and managerial roles. Learners will explore the challenges of being an autonomous practitioner, expert, leader and member of interdisciplinary and multiagency teams where common goals are shared and when philosophies for care do not align and how they can effectively promote human rights approaches to care as a midwife working across a range of professional groups, services and contexts. Using enquiry-based learning, learners will be expected to independently identify research questions and to demonstrate discernment in the location and application of evidence to inform learning.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically evaluate the diversity and sustainability of leadership roles within midwifery in the UK and globally and the opportunities and challenges encountered by the midwives who occupy these roles
  • Critically evaluate the capabilities, responsibilities, and contribution of specialist and leading midwives to the development and maintenance of quality and safety for women, childbearing people, and their families across maternity services, both as autonomous practitioners and as multi-disciplinary team members.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the ways in which midwives in leadership roles progress their career aspirations and maintain their professional standing
  • Critically reflect on the principles of professional-ethical behaviour as a developing midwife, demonstrating self-awareness and recognising personal contribution towards the development of others
