Exclusions
Description This module aligns to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives Domain 5 \"Promoting excellence: the midwife as colleague, scholar and leader. Learners will critically consider the use and application of evidence in healthcare policy and practice, as well as limitations, by engaging with and reviewing local, national and international research in midwifery and related fields. They will have the opportunity to develop their skills in scholarship through supported critical appraisal of qualitative and quantitative research paradigms and methods, audit and service evaluation methodologies and the use of engagement and consultation in developing services. Learners will consider the ethical dimensions of research and enquiry, as well as the interpretation and application of findings to their own practice and the wider maternity service.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the importance of research and scholarship in midwifery and related fields to safe and effective care.
  • Understand the limits of knowledge gained from research in maternity care and critically explore how data and theoretical frameworks from other disciplines can be safely applied to midwifery practice
  • Demonstrate a developing proficiency in the critical appraisal, analysis, evaluation, synthesis and application of a range of appropriate evidence gathered from a broad range of sources to enable logical conclusions to be drawn and sound recommendations to be madeĀ 
  • Employ scholarly approaches to systematically identify, formulate and justify a quality improvement initiative to develop service provision
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

An annotated bibliography (1000 words)
Presentation of a narrative review (20 minutes)

Reassessment:

Learners will resubmit failed component(s)

A Quality improvement plan (Maximum 3000 words)

All reassessments will be capped at 40%.
