Description A collage of images, a strange juxtaposition, the power of the voice and the power of silence. While often thought of as separate forms, poetry and film have much in common and their history is richly intertwined. The module will focus on poetic films and filmic poems from past and present, covering a broad spectrum of media from experimental cinema to music videos, installation art to avant-garde poetry. Through a series of discursive seminars we will discuss and analyse individual texts for their cultural significance, techniques and creative potential in our own work. Students will be encouraged to work with originally created texts or to adapt existing written works to create a work that combines the possibilities of film and poetry to create a new hybrid work of professional quality while shot and assembled using something as simple as a mobile phone. A specialist module for students interested in working in poetry and/or independent filmmaking.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Consolidate and develop their creative and critical practice in the development and production of an original film work at an advanced level.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of experimental film and poetry, techniques and conventions as well as an active knowledge of major practitioners in the field.
  • Confidently adapt original creative texts and/or develop creative texts for adaptation in the service of a finished film.
  • Articulate and analyse their creative decisions and evaluate their innovation within contemporary practice.
