Description Students will be introduced to a range of methods for carrying out research projects in language and applied linguistics.

Students will work in teams to plan a linguistic research project which responds to a real world challenge, such as a problem posed by an employer or an academic researcher. Students will put their linguistic expertise to work in exploring and evaluating possible methods and sources of data, then these skills will be utilised to gather and analyse data, and to present their findings, orally and in writing. The module will develop important academic and professional skills such as working as part of a team, and designing an effective research project to meet real world needs.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Apply their expertise in linguistic research to plan and conduct a piece of research.
  • Show how different research methods from applied linguistics have been used in professional or workplace contexts.
  • Consider the range of possible linguistic methods and sources of data to be used in linguistic research and select an appropriate research method to address particular research questions.
  • Gather and analyse linguistic data in a problem-oriented manner and effectively present their response to a linguistics research brief.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

(1) Essay, 1750 words (50%)

(2) PRSL B - Group presentation (10 minutes) – 50% of the module mark

Reassessment:

Failed component only
(1) Essay, 1750 words (50%)
(2) Group presentation: reassessment takes the form of an individual digital presentation (5 minutes)– 50%
