Exclusions
Description This module enables the student to demonstrate professional competence in a substantial AI and data science research project, applying material learned across the degree programme. Students will utilise research methods, data science methods and appropriate AI tools to design solutions that take full account of the appropriate sustainable development frameworks. Projects are chosen from staff suggestions or are developed from the student's original idea. Projects may involve co-supervisors from multiple disciplines.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Apply core machine learning techniques and algorithms to address sustainable development challenges.
  • Examine practical, ethical, social and cultural considerations in deploying AI solutions in international development contexts.
  • Design an end-to-end AI/ML solution for a sustainable development issue, considering technical constraints and perspectives of local stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively about the risks, limitations and unintended consequences of AI innovations for sustainable development.

8000-word written report (75%) and 10 mins project presentation (25%)
