Description The module aims to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the mathematics and the principals of mechanics used in engineering geoscience, and to develop mathematics and mechanics skills in problem solving. The module focusses on methods required in Geotechnical Engineering including working with: equations and algebra; geometry; trigonometry; concepts of forces and stresses; graphical data representations; introductory statistics. The module also reinforces topics covered in structural geology and hydrogeology elsewhere in the course including understanding the basic flow of fluids and covers some basic understanding of material behaviour.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Understand mathematics and mechanics concepts, principles and methods in an engineering and geological context.
  • Be familiar with equations and be able to manipulate and apply them appropriately
  • Apply mathematical and mechanics concepts to geological and engineering problem solving.
  • Work quantitatively with graphical data representations.
