The module is concerned with engineering geology, focussing on developing skills that would be required in industry with a focus on applying geological expertise to applied problems. The key theoretical components in the module deliver grounding in engineering principals as applied to geological materials including rocks and soils. Practical classes will develop worked examples of application of theory to things like slope stability. Main coursework will provide real life examples and opportunity to gain experience in the concept and practice of site investigations where geological expertise is used to evaluate sites for construction.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Understand the theory of soil and rock shear strength and soil consolidation and be able to apply both to engineering problems.
Design and understand how to conduct a site investigation
Explain the purpose and challenges in translating geological expertise to engineering problems
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Assessment:
Coursework – Site Investigation report 2000 words Exam – 2 hours short answer questions/practical exam
Reassessment:
Submission of failed components: Site investigation report resubmitted on a different case study. Resit examination.
