Description Placements take place over a 6-month period with each student allocated to a host placement in applied clinical, educational, or forensic psychology, or in a psychology-informed discipline, such as with a special educational needs (SEN) professional. Students work on placement for 3-days/week and work under the supervision of a qualified professional employed by the host organisation. Student work various and can include involvement in a mixture of activities, for example: psychometric assessments, audit, service evaluation, teaching / training, co-facilitating therapeutic groups; contributing to prescribed assessments and interventions; project work; communication, dissemination and organisational work; and literature reviews. Students will receive regular (an average of 1x /week) supervision within the host organisation. Students are visited twice on placement (in January for a formative visit, and in April for a summative visit). Students will use some of their placement time to contribute to the planning, development, and undertaking of a substantial piece of written work (i.e., a case study, an assessment report, or an evaluation report) that will be submitted as a Professional Practice Report. Students will also attend 6x Reflective Practice Groups (run at UoB) over the course of their placement to support them in the development of their reflective-practitioner skills. The overall aim of this module is for students to gain in-depth insights into the implementation of psychological knowledge and skills in practice, and to acquire experience that will make them competitive applicants, at entry level, in an applied psychology career or a career in a closely-related discipline.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the Module, students should be able to:
  • Specific learning outcomes and placement goals (as relevant to aspects of psychology-informed professional practice) will be agreed between the student and placement supervisor (and agreed by the University MSci Appraisal Tutor) at the start of the placement and will be supplemented by domains for assessment as described in the ‘Review Guide for Placement and Professional Practice’ in the MSci Handbook.

  • To advance knowledge and understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of psychology in-depth and to develop new skills to a high level.
  • To critically evaluate and reflect on their own practical work and aspects of personal and professional development.
