Description The Natural Sciences Group Research Project challenges students to work in multidisciplinary teams to research a significant topic or problem rooted in interdisciplinary science. Students work on a staff designated topic and develop a group approach to the topic building on the skills and knowledge across the multidisciplinary group in consultation with a supervisor (appointed to guide and advise on their progress). Students design and carry out a field, desk, and/or laboratory based experimental methodology utilising methods from multiple disciplines. Students then conclude by producing a substantial portfolio of independent research demonstrating analytical and conceptual skills.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Design and undertake a scholarly and evidentiary review
  • Organise and present data in a professional way (accurate referencing, complete bibliography, clear tables and illustrations)
  • Develop a viable interdisciplinary research question relevant to the natural sciences with guidance from supervisors and staff
  • Test the quality of primary material or sources and identify key evidence relevant to sustain the argument pursued
  • Construct a fluent and coherent extended argument
  • Complete an integrated analysis of primary evidence and secondary material as appropriate to sustain the chosen argument
  • Work effectively as a group to manage time and maximise the benefits of the supervisory framework
  • Effectively share knowledge within a multidisciplinary team
  • Design and execute a suitable methodology to answer research questions identified
