Description In this module students will be working in the Clinical Skills (Phantom Head) facility of the School of Dentistry as well as in a specialist clinical environment.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • At the level of a 4th year student, recognise the indications and requirements for the provision of advanced restorative options in the replacement of weakened or missing teeth.
  • Design and execute the preparation of teeth so as to preserve and protect tooth tissues and permit the placement of more advanced dental restorations at a learner or competent standard
  • Evaluate and use appropriate dental materials to provide permanent and temporary restorations for prepared teeth
  • At a competent or learner level, manage a range of procedures in simulation, including conventional and resin retained bridge preparations and multi-rooted endodontic therapy.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the aetiology, pathogenesis, prognosis and management (i.e. history taking, physical examination [including evaluation of abnormal physical sigs], investigation, accurate diagnosis and therapy) of orofacial disease.
  • Critically appraise the literature underpinning current treatment and patient management philosophies

  • Evaluate the significance of a patient's general medical status on oral health (e.g. knowledge of the oral manifestations of underlying disease.

  • Prevent, diagnose and manage pain appropriately, effectively and safely with minimal assistance

  • Create an oral environment where restoration or replacement of the tooth is viable

  • Monitor and review treatment outcomes

  • Manage restorative procedures that preserve tooth structure, replace missing or defective tooth structure, maintain function, are aesthetic and long lasting, and promote soft and hard tissue health

  • At the level of a 4th year student, assess, diagnose and manage the health of the dental pulp and periradicular tissues, including treatment to prevent pulpal and periradicular disease
  • 19.13
  • Recognise the role of surgical management of periradicular disease
  • 19.14
  • Determine the prognosis and undertake appropriate non- surgical treatments, with the assistance of supervising staff, to manage pulpal and periradicular disease for uncomplicated deciduous and uncomplicated permanent teeth

  • Recognise the risks of non-surgical root canal treatment and how to manage them. Evaluate the need for more complex treatment and refer accordingly

  • Identify his/her limitations in managing oral disease and when and how to refer to specialist care.

  • Demonstrate efficient and compassionate communication at patient level, explaining clearly and with confidence the nature of the patient's oral condition, employing a variety of methods and ensuring patients understand their role in managing their disease.

Students will be given a written report on the module followed up with a face to face meeting.

Reassessment:

Reassessment:

Students who fail this module will be given feedback on their performance and advised how to improve prior to the re-assessment.

Students who fail the continuous assessment component of this module will undertake a period of remedial teaching and re-submission of the lab portfolios. The reassessment will be performed in the same way as listed above.

In the event of failure in the module and a student is deemed to be underperforming clinically in only this area, a resit of the year may be offered at the discretion of the exam board.
