LC Research Methods Assessment Block 1 students’ knowledge and understanding of the research processes and methods and the statistical and technical skills psychologists and neuroscientists use to study mind and behaviour. Through a combination of written reports and experiential learning students will demonstrate and reflect on their knowledge and understanding of how to collect, analyse, and present quantitative data and evaluate quantitative research findings and theory.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Summarise the processes involved in quantitative research studies.
Understand and apply the concepts and methods behind hypothesis testing in the context of experimental design.
Present the results of psychological research within a written report format.
Write reports that are clear, well-organised and persuasive.
Apply simple statistical concepts and methods and use software to carry out simple analyses.
Demonstrate the ability to use software to perform simple statistical analyses.
Explain when and how to use Chi-square, t-tests and their non-parametric equivalent tests.
Describe the need for principled ethical research in psychology.
Demonstrate the ability to think logically and critically about their own and other people’s work.
Demonstrate the ability to use physical and electronic facilities for communication, knowledge acquisition, and presentation of work.
Demonstrate the ability to use reflective self-assessment to revise their own writing
Demonstrate the ability to critically read and interpret a research paper.
Understand the concept of plagiarism in a scientific context.
