Description
Students will be taught about forming hypothesis and a variety of research methods and then encouraged and supported in developing their first piece of independent research. The students will be expected to carry out their research over 6-12 months within their local workplace, a School of Cancer Sciences Laboratory or a local Hospital. This will be the final module of the programme whereby the students bring together the analysis skills that they learnt during the Epidemiology and Statistics module with presentation, writing and critical thinking skills that they have developed during the programme to present in dissertation format a summary of an independent research project.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Develop and justify the choice of question within the context of their programme aims
Conduct a detailed study of the literature to define precise scientific questions and the investigative approaches to be used
Identify, collect and analyse appropriate data/ information (gaining ethical approval if appropriate) demonstrating effective project management
Present their own independent research findings in a range of suitable tables and figures
Interpret their findings in the light of relevant published literature and critically appraise their strengths and weaknesses in both design and implementation
Demonstrate the ability to disseminate the research, its conduct, methodology, results, conclusions and implications at M level through both written and oral means.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Dissertation of around 12 000 words- independently marked by two internal examiners (85%). 15 minute oral presentation and 5 minutes of questions/ defence (15%). Students must pass both elements.
