Description
The aim of this module is to provide students with an introduction to current developments in the understanding and treatment of epilepsy. The module covers the epidemiology, morbidity and mortality of epilepsy; the classification, causes and aetiology, and the basic principles of human epilepsy. It considers the medical, psychological and social consequences of having epilepsy, as well as the diagnosis and management of the most common psychiatric disorders associated with epilepsy.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
Describe the epidemiology, morbidity and mortality of epilepsy;
Describe the classification of human epilepsy;
Understand the basic neurochemistry and neurophysiology of epilepsy;
Describe the causes and aetiology of human epilepsy;
Know the wide differential diagnosis of seizure-like disorders;
Describe the methods of investigation of seizure activity including the importance of proper description and observation;
Describe the basic principles of treatment of human epilepsy;
Describe the medical, psychological and social consequences of having epilepsy;
Understand that people with epilepsy who are children, adolescent, elderly or women have different needs;
Understand the role that different members of the health team have in managing epilepsy.
