This module will be taught by a blended learning approach with students doing a mixture of self directed and directed distance learning, combined with 5 days of intensive directed learning and assessment on campus. The module will require students to critically assess the evidence behind the management of solid tumours. Multidisciplinary approaches to perioperative care will be discussed, and the principles of surgical management, recent advances and future perspectives will be taught.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Critically discuss the evidence for and current best practice in the surgical management of a range of tumour types, e.g. gastrointestinal, gynaecological, urological, breast, hepatobiliary, and lung
Evaluate the issues involved in perioperative care and post-surgical rehabilitation, and discuss the role of the multidisciplinary team members in helping to resolve these
Critically discuss recent advances in surgical management, minimal access technique and modern imaging technologies
Demonstrate an awareness of the future prospective of cancer management by surgery and where this fits into cancer management strategies as a whole.
Discuss the role of the different healthcare professionals in the management of the cancer patients’ journey
Assessment There will be 2 parts to the assessment: 1) 10 minute oral presentation on a given case. Students will be assessed on the research into the topic, the analytical skills demonstrated and their presentation skills. They should produce a hand-out summarising their presentation and covering the key background information, including relevant literature (50%).
2)10 Structured open book questions to be completed in the 6 weeks post-module, showing evidence of engagement with the research literature, understanding of cancer management strategies and evaluation of the merits and limitations of different surgical approaches (2000 words total). 50% of module mark
Reassessment If a student fails the module they will be required to repeat the failed component only.
Students failing the written assignment will be required to re-write it based in the feedback provided.
Failure to submit/ attend a component will mean that the student has failed that component and will be required to re-sit it.
