Exclusions
Description This module will run over the whole year and will be composed of a few revision lectures, tutorials and hands on. For the option with the residential week the tutorials will be run online as indicated in Appendix 1. The practical sessions will be during the residential week. For the clinical option, the tutorials will be held face to face on alternate Saturday session. The Saturday sessions will also include clinical skills and clinical sessions. The practical sessions will be based on specific topics covered in modules 1 and 2. Vital pulp therapy and regenerative endodontic procedures will be discussed and students will practically undertake these procedures using clinical simulation. This will cover the use of contemporary materials and current guidelines for vital pulp therapy. Different systems for root canal preparation will be introduced including both rotary and reciprocation techniques. Students will be exposed to different commercial suppliers to allow students to be familiar with the range of options available and determine what would be suitable in their clinical practice. Practical sessions will be conducted on a variety of obturation techniques to allow students to be familiar of evidenced based specialist practice. The clinical option will include both clinical skills and some new cases clinics
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate competency in techniques of accessing and preparing a root canal
  • Appraise the concept of tapers, canal complex anatomy and the systems available to help prepare root canals.
  • Knowledge of different obturation techniques and decision making on choosing the right technique for each specific case.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

Practical – 75%
Oral Examination – 25%

The practical will consist of tooth preparation and obturation with a chosen system taught in the module. The practical will be undertaken over 1 hour and 30 minutes will be dedicated to reflection of the session.

The oral examination will include
Unseen Case – 15%
Presentation (15 mins) on a journal identified by a candidate- 5%
Oral exam 15 minutes – 5%
The oral exam will be conducted face to face.

Reassessment:

Repeated exercises with 3 repeats. If still unsatisfactory the students will have to repeat the module the following year. This does not preclude them from moving to the next module and Year 2.
