Description The module is designed to introduce (or refresh) and apply fundamental principles of materials and materials science and progress to understand how central concepts relate to the clinical use of biomaterials. Students will benefit from learning the theoretical aspects of materials science, applying key concepts in practical lab work and developing transferable academic research skills through a comprehensive curriculum.
Topics will include:
Fundamentals of Biomaterials
Principles of Materials Characterisation
Academic and Research Skills (Critical appraisal, academic writing, and presentation)
Laboratory-based experiments – practical aspects and data acquisition.
Analytics and Statistics (Statistical analysis and data presentation)
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Summarise the fundamental properties and classes of biomaterials, the behaviour of materials and the application of this knowledge to recognise their influence on the handling and performance in clinical applications.
  • Apply a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts of the mechanical, optical and physical behaviour to relevant experiments performed in the laboratory.
  • Evaluate the basic principles of materials characterisation including mechanical testing, spectroscopy, surface properties, rheology and image analysis.
  • Design and execute appropriate experiments for measuring bulk and surface material properties, interpret data and output appropriate written descriptions and analysis.
  • Critically appraise and discuss relevant literature to identify study limitations, knowledge gaps and research questions
  • .
Assessment 40504-01 : MCQ Exam : Exam (School Arranged) - MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) (20%)
40504-02 : SAQ Exam : Exam (School Arranged) - Written Unseen (40%)
40504-03 : Critical Appraisal and Journal Presentation : Coursework (40%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:

Assessments:
The module will be assessed by:
a 1.5-hour structured, multiple choice and short answer written examination comprising Part A: 20 multiple choice questions, correct answer(s) out of 4 (20%) and Part B: a choice of 4 from 6 questions (40%). Each question has 4 parts, each with increasing difficulty.
Critical appraisal and Journal Club Presentation of relevant literature (40%)

Reassessment:

Repeat assessment of failed components only, if the module is not passed. Since the assessment is based on group work, if reassessment of the experimental methods and data analysis write-up is required, an individual 2000-word essay on a topic similar to the initial assignment will be set.

Internal hurdles:

An overall mark of 50% or above must be obtained to pass the module, with each individual assessment scoring not less than 40%.
