Description
Many aspects of processing dental materials and additive manufacturing involve polymerization reactions, from manufacture of denture bases, photopolymerization of resin restorative materials, to taking impressions.. The aim of this module is to apply basic polymer science principles to advance knowledge in a variety of polymer-based systems and related processing technologies. Topics willinclude: Free-radical polymerization Initiation, processes Adhesive Dentistry Advancements in Resin Restorative Materials Curing technologies and clinical considerations Resin technologies in Digital Dentistry
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Discuss basic polymer properties and interpret the structure-property behaviour of composite materials in general, means available for controlling behaviour, and limitations on the practicality for various applications related to dentistry.
Critically evaluate and demonstrate the multifactorial nature and operational constraints for light-cured filling materials
Apply the chemical concepts and material properties of acrylic resin in order to understand the development, properties and handling of modern restorative polymer composite materials.
Investigate the processes of initiation, propagation and termination of free radical polymerization to further understand their consequences on material properties.
.
Discuss the advancement and application of resin technologies in digital dentistry.
Design and execute appropriate experiments for testing mechanical and physical material properties of polymers and polymer composites, interpret data and output appropriate written descriptions and analysis.
Assessments: The module will be assessed by: a 1.5 hour structured, multiple choice and short answer written examination comprising Part A: 20 multiple choice questions, correct answer(s) out of 4 (20%) and Part B: a choice of 4 from 6 questions (40%). Each question has 4 parts, each with increasing difficulty. . Experimental methods and data analysis assessment (40%) comprising of lab work and a write-up (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions).
Reassessment:
Repeat examination of failed components only,. If reassessment of the experimental methods and data analysis write-up is required, an individual 1000-word essay on a topic similar to the initial assignment will be set.
internal hurdles
An overall mark of 50% or above must be obtained to pass the module, with each individual assessment scoring not less than 40%.
