Description
The module is offered to students as part of the specialist negotiated pathway within the MSc Advancing Practice (Nursing). It is also offered as a CPD module. There is an increasing need for nurses working at advanced levels of practice with patients who are near the end of life or recently bereaved. The will prepare nurses to manage the complex decision-making, communication, therapeutic care and issues around emotional labour, ethics and leadership in regards to end of life care.
This module is delivered in partnership with clinical experts based in the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, Marie Curie, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, Birmingham Community Trust.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Critically appraise palliative care theory, research and the professional literature, further extending the students' knowledge and skills in this area
Demonstrate skills in critical reflection and self-evaluate professional practice
Critically discuss complex issues related to the person with a life limiting illness and close persons
Identify the signs and risks of emotional labour amongst healthcare professionals in relation to end of life care giving and demonstrate ways of managing it within your team
Apply skills for interdisciplinary learning within the context of palliative and supportive care relating to diversity, ethics and clinical practice
