Description
This module aims to introduce the student to the basic principles of qualitative research, its role and purpose, as well as its limitations, with a view to enabling the student to design their own qualitative study, analyse and interpret qualitative data and critically assess qualitative work performed by others.
Through a series of theoretical and practical lectures and workshops, students will be introduced to a variety of qualitative research methods and the analysis process for qualitative data, which have been developed and used within health and medical research. In addition to taught elements of the module and required readings, students will be encouraged to learn through applying qualitative thinking to their professional interest/ experience and through practical sessions encompassing all aspects of carrying out a research project (design, data collection and analysis). They will also be introduced to criteria for quality and rigour and approaches to critical appraisal as appropriate for different methodologies and traditions.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Gain an understanding of the role, purpose and limitations of qualitative enquiry, its appropriate use, and its relevance to healthcare practice and research.
Demonstrate an understanding of how different qualitative research methods can be applied to answer different research questions, and the role of theory in qualitative research.
To demonstrate an understanding of a variety of approaches to qualitative analysis and to be able to analyse and interpret qualitative data.
To develop skills to devise, design and carry out a qualitative study.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Assessment: Assignment 3500 words (+/- 10%): comprising of the following sections: Demonstrate and discuss the value of qualitative research for a health-related topic Produce a focused appraisal of a qualitative paper Analyse the data excerpts provided Produce a discussion section drawing together findings from the above sections
Reassessment: Students who fail the first attempt at their assignment will be permitted to resubmit following individual feedback on their original submission.
