Topics discussed in this second module include: Epilepsy; Stroke and brain trauma; Movement disorders; Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease, dystonias, tardive dyskinesia; The aging brain; Dementia, Alzheimer's Disease; Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease; Learning, memory and smart drugs; Mood disorders and schizophrenia; Pain; Addiction.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student will be able to: Distinguish the causes, treatment options and consequences of individual neurological and psychiatric disorders. Describe the molecular and cellular mechanisms of learning and memory and evaluate the uses of so-called ¿smart drugs¿ which may enhance these functions. Explain the mechanisms and protective functions of pain, and approaches to the alleviation of excessive pain. Describe the biological basis of addictive behaviour, the harmful physical effects caused by drugs of abuse and explain strategies available for reducing substance misuse.
