Description The aim of this module is to introduce students to quantitative research design, data collection and analysis, so that they can confidently appraise quantitative research and use quantitative skills in their own research projects.

The module introduces students to primary quantitative research methods that are commonly used within applied health research (cohort studies, case control and randomised controlled trials). Students will develop the necessary skills to formulate research ideas and identify appropriate methods to test a hypothesis. Quantitative research design, sampling strategies, data collection and data analysis techniques involved in quantitative research are explored to enable students to identify common sources of bias and misreporting. The module also provides an introduction to computer software (SPSS/Excel) to manage and analyse data.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Apply and critically evaluate structured frameworks (e.g., PICO, PEO, SPIDER) to formulate clear, focused, and researchable questions that align with complex clinical, professional, or theoretical issues.
  • Design and justify a methodologically sound research strategy, selecting an appropriate quantitative in alignment with the research aim.
  • Interrogate ethical principles and governance frameworks to evaluate the ethical implications of proposed research, demonstrating advanced ethical reasoning and reflexivity.
  • Critically evaluate and select appropriate data collection methods, demonstrating the ability to manage practical, theoretical, and contextual challenges in research implementation.
  • Critically analyse and interpret descriptive and inferential statistical data, including the application of hypothesis testing, applying advanced reasoning to draw valid conclusions and inform evidence-based practice or policy.
