Description This module will enable practitioners working in any paediatric palliative care setting develop and enhance their knowledge and skills of the nature and scope of paediatric palliative care. Students will explore and examine a range of subjects including symptom management, communication and grief and loss and the impact these have on palliative care. Students will also be supported in developing their knowledge of professional, legal and ethical issues in paediatric palliative care. The module is designed and co-led in collaboration with Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the nature and scope of inter-professional paediatric palliative care within a multicultural society.
  • Demonstrate the ability to critically appraise professional, legal and ethical principles and theories in relation to current issues in paediatric palliative care and practice.
  • Critically discuss the psychological, emotional and social impact of the life-limiting diagnosis on children, families and professionals.
  • Critically evaluate clinical decision making skills in the management of complex care in the context of paediatric palliative care.
  • Synthesize reflective evidence with literature based data to inform an identified area of development in practice.
