Description
The Research Project module will support the development of a work-based research project in the form of a service evaluation. The focus of the evaluation will be chosen by the students with guidance from the module team, their allocated dissertation supervisor, in agreement with their Practice Assessor. It will be undertaken in either their usual place of work, or an allocated placement area. The aim of this module is to develop the student’s ability to:
Identify areas of practice requiring service evaluation, based upon clinical or service drivers
Systematically identify, critically appraise and synthesise available evidence to support key themes within the service evaluation and identify appropriate best practice criteria within the contemporaneous evidence base
Gain an understanding of service evaluation methodologies and reporting frameworks
Prepare a project report, in the style of a journal publication, to reflect the key outcome of the literature review and evaluation and propose future areas of development to support quality improvement processes within the clinical area
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Plan an investigation within a clinical area relevant to health and social care with a focus on service evaluation methodologies.
Review and critically analyse existing evidence, policies, and guidelines in this area to inform the focus and nature of the investigation.
Determine appropriate methods of investigation; justifying the rationale and recognising its limitations.
Collect, review and interpret the evaluation data and explain the significance, clinical relevance and implications for service transformation for patient or population benefit.
Present the work in the appropriate format for journal publication an oral presentation of findings.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Assessment: The word count will be based upon the journal style chosen, with a requirement of 7000 words. The student must achieve an overall mark of at least 50%. The Research Project will be double-marked.
Presentation (30%): A formal presentation, in the form of a poster presentation will be examined, with questions following from an academic panel. This will report the project methodology, outputs and potential impact. Reassessment: Failure to achieve an overall average of at least 50% in either assessment will require the student to improve and resubmit the failed element only.
