Module Aim

This module is the entry module for the student on MSc Nursing with registration as a nurse in adult or mental health or children’s nursing. Students will use this module to advance their knowledge of health and nursing care and apply this to their field of practice. At the end of this module, students will be required to demonstrate the level of practice and underpinning knowledge and skills required by the Practice Assessment Document part 1. This will include simulated clinical experiences for maternity and mental health care for adult students. An academic and practice assessor will be accountable for ensuring that assessment for this module is completed in line with the NMC (2018) Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment.

Introduction to postgraduate study and professional development to include preparation for practice. The module aims to enable the student to:
  • Critically analyse health and policy drivers for current nursing practice;
  • Critique policy and contexts in which individual and population health improvement and care is advanced and delivered;
  • Critically evaluate a strengths-based approach to health promotion and nursing care;
  • Critically reflect on communication and relationship management skills as part of nursing health promoting, therapeutic and collegial relationships;
  • Understand the information and communication needs across the life span and for people with sudden or enduring mental health conditions or learning disability;
  • Support and develop practice using the holistic and fundamental principles of nursing in line with the NMC Code (NMC 2018a) and Standards (NMC, 2018b) and apply these to a field of practice.
Evidence-based procedures to support health and nursing care including the maintenance of:
  • Safety, dignity, privacy;
  • Comfort and sleep;
  • Skin integrity and hygiene;
  • Mobility;
  • Nutrition, hydration;
  • Elimination;
  • Temperature regulation;
  • Safe medicines administration;
  • Respiratory and circulatory assessment;
  • Person-centred nursing assessment and care planning;
  • Reasonable adjustments in care assessment and planning.
A nursing practice placement within the chosen field of practice is included in this module and the assessment will use part 1 Practice Assessment Document.

Learning and Teaching Strategies

A range of learning and teaching activities will be used, including lead lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, technology enhanced learning. Service users are actively included in the development of appropriate communication scenarios designed to develop both generic and field related communication skills. Students will be able to draw on a range of online resources that enhance prior learning and develop individual learning needs in biological and psychological sciences that underpin fundamental care.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically reflect upon the ethical, legal and professional responsibility of the nurse in using effective communication to facilitate health, self- care, reasonable adjustments and shared decision-making with people;
  • Critically evaluate the impact of sustainable goals or targets on national public health policy and discuss the importance for delivery of health promotion and health improvement and protection in nursing;
  • Critique the use of digital technologies to communicate, inform, influence change, and to support role modelling and acting as ambassador for health and nursing;
  • Recognise common signs and symptoms of deviation from normal physiology and psychology in children, young people and adults, assessing and responding to ensure appropriate nursing care and safe administration of medicines is provided;
  • Critically evaluate the needs of people receiving nursing care, using self-evaluation to recognise own boundaries and professional development within the area of practice.
