Description

The Critique is an analytical essay of approximately 5 ,000 words on a scientifically controversial topic. It differs from the second year dissertation in that a critical evaluation of the scientific arguments is required. This will require close reading of the original research literature, as well as other sources. A list of over 30 or so titles and a brief description of the area that the critique should cover is available every year. Students may suggest an alternative topic, subject to approval of the critique co-ordinator. This is an excellent way of developing an expertise in a topic which you may wish to develop after your first degree.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate an ability to carry out research of complex literature associated with a current and evolving topic in some depth;
  • critically assess the various facets of a problem even when authoritative figures disagree;
  • have highly developed presentational and organisational skills;
  • discriminate between authoritative and more questionable sources of information;
  • consistently use a clear and appropriate system for referencing source material at all relevant points in the text;
  • submit an essay in clear, well-written, grammatical English, of the required word-length and according to the specified deadline;
  • have developed critical powers and ability to follow differing views of a current, unresolved scientific issue;
  • provide a serious encounter with the original research literature;
  • give a further opportunity for the development of presentational skills
