Description

This module provides an opportunity for Year 3 students to gain firsthand experience of science education through a mentoring scheme with science teaching in local secondary schools. Each student will work with classes for half a day every week for a full semester of about 10 weeks. The classes will vary from key stage 3 to sixth form. Students will be selected by interview for their commitment and suitability for working in schools, and will be given a range of responsibilities from classroom assistance to self-originated special projects.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to:
  • Understand the needs of individual learners in a science classroom;
  • Use standard teaching methods;
  • Develop interpersonal skills, appreciate staff responsibilities and demonstrate communication skills;
  • Prepare lesson plans and teaching materials at an appropriate level;
  • Gain a deeper insight into a particular area of Physics Education by working on an individual project.
