Single and joint honour students in the School of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation Sciences with appropriate prerequisites; it can also be opened to international exchange students at the discretion of the School.
This module, Sports Nutrition, is concerned with the study and practice of nutrition and diet as it relates to athletic performance. The module broadly covers the key principles of nutrition, carbohydrates for training and competition, fluid and electrolyte needs, dietary protein for athletes, dietary fat and performance, micronutrient and supplements. A particular focus is given to the science behind nutritional recommendations for athletes, as a good mechanistic understanding is critical to be able to carefully interpret new advances in Sports Nutrition and offer evidence-based and credible advice to sports performers. You will be expected to draw on your knowledge of physiology and biochemistry, interpret scientific studies after critical reading and analysis and should be able to translate the theory into practical advice for athletes.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
Give Give nutrition advice to athletes that will support or improve their performance which is based on the latest scientific findings
Critically appraise scientific evidence as its relates to contemporary issues in sports nutrition
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of biochemistry and cell physiology as applied to sports nutrition
