Restrictions
This module is only available to students on the International Foundation Year programme (multiple pathways) and the Home/EU Foundation Year programmes in the EPS College.
Safeguarding is led by the BIA for under 18s, academics teaching this module would not have 1-1 meetings with students in private offices with U18. Academics having 1-1 tutorials will be DBS checked and aware of relevant safeguarding procedures
This module aims to provide a good foundation for studies in Organic Chemistry. The first part of the module covers important topics such as nomenclature, simple isomerism and “arrow pushing” mechanisms. The concepts studied are then applied to the reactions of sp, sp2 and sp3 carbon centres, for example: alkanes, alkenes, arenes, halogenoalkanes, alcohols, aldehydes & ketones, carboxylic acids and polymers.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the basics of organic chemistry: nomenclature, isomerism and arrow pushing mechanisms;
Demonstrate an understanding of the basic chemistry associated with the organic functional groups covered;
Apply functional group chemistry to suggest basic organic reaction schemes.
