Description

This module will cover relevant areas in the understanding of cell and developmental biology, with a major focus on the model systems and methods employed in these areas. A particular focus will be placed on topics such as the cell life cycle, the intracellular signalling pathways, as well as the mechanisms through which cells physically interact with each other, and their external environment, to regulate cell fate and function. Development of multicellular organisms will be considered from the regulation of stem cell function to the differentiation of organs, as well as from genetic, cellular, and molecular perspectives.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to:

  • Describe processes of development in animals and plants, and discuss the mechanisms regulating organogenesis and differentiation
  • Recognise, define and explain terms and processes relevant to the study of stem cells and various cellular processes such as cell adhesion, the extracellular matrix, cell migration, cell cycle, cell death and cell signalling
  • Understand the complexity of various cellular processes, how they are regulated at the molecular level, and how they are involved in tissue homeostasis
  • Critically evaluate relevant methods used and regulatory mechanisms discussed in cell and developmental biology
  • Choose and explain relevant model systems for use in addressing cellular and developmental biology questions
