Description

The module provides an introduction to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and its relevance to inorganic, organometallic and organic compounds. The techniques of simple NMR and, Multi-Nuclear NMR Spectroscopy will be considered. Emphasis is placed on the use of these techniques for the solution of structural problems both as individual techniques and when combined in an integrated approach. The underlying theory is kept to the minimum required (this aspect is developed in other modules). Application of the various techniques developed, and practice at integrated problem solving, is reinforced through completion of a series of worksheets [problem-sheets] at the scheduled workshop sessions.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the underlying principles of NMR, within the context of the course;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the underlying principles of Multi-Nuclear NMR, within the context of the course;
  • Apply the techniques developed in the course to the solution of relevant problems;
  • Demonstrate the ability to elucidate the structure of organic and inorganic compounds by interpretation of data supplied and using an integrated approach [where appropriate].
Assessment 25019-01 : Exam : Exam (Centrally Timetabled) - Written Unseen (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessments:

Formal Written Unseen Examination: 100% - An end of session examination contributes 100% to the overall module mark; the exam is 2 hours in duration and is closed book. The exam assessment for this module is linked to the module titled: Symmetry, Group Theory and Vibrational Spectroscopy.

Reassessment:

The module is re-assessed using a 2-hour examination in the August/September re-assessment period; the assessment is closed book and written unseen.
