Description This module introduces some of the basic structures of matter and how these structures affect material properties in science and engineering. Density, elasticity, heat flow and radioactivity will be covered.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic atomic structure and bonding and how the architecture of atomic and molecular solids affect their properties and use, with particular reference to metals, alloys, ceramics and polymers
  • Describe and calculate the properties of materials under tension & compression; perform calculations involving density, floating and sinking
  • Perform calculations involving temperature scales, heat flow and calorimetry
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the properties of radioactive materials, including the calculations of half life and decay constants
Assessment 30320-01 : exam : Exam (Centrally Timetabled) - Written Unseen (70%)
