Description
This module develops a basic understanding of the principles of mechanics and the fundamental concepts of vibrations and wave motion. Statics, kinematics and dynamics will be covered, together with simple harmonic motion and basic wave properties.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Understand and apply the basic laws of statics, kinematics and dynamics in simple linear and rotating systems.
Show a basic understanding of Simple Harmonic Motion and use equations for simple vibrating systems
Use appropriate terminology, equations and graphical representations to describe different types of waves and wave phenomena
Define what is meant by reflection, refraction, polarization and superposition (leading to interference and diffraction effects) and calculate simple quantities associated with such effects
