Description
This module, which is linked with the Undergraduate Ambassador Scheme (www.uas.ac.uk), will give final year undergraduate students a first-hand experience of science education by offering a teaching experience that provides key transferable skills and encourages undergraduates to consider a career in teaching.
Students will be provided with initial input from the Department of Teacher Education
Students will be linked with a local school where they will spend 3-4h per week for at least 7 weeks working closely with a teacher.
Students will complete a special project negotiated with their School contact and University supervisor
Students will be selected by interview for their commitment and suitability for working in schools.
The module will be normally be taken with Evidence Based Literature Review 03 23991 in the first semester and these together will make up the project component of the final year.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
Communicate aspects of the Biosciences to school pupils
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers
Plan, organise and prepare for their engagement in school
Develop innovative and creative solutions to problems and challenges and critically review their implementation
Present their work in a written report and oral presentation
Assessments: Oral Presentation (20%)
Assessment by teacher (20%)
Written Report 4000 words to include a literature survey, a description of the special project and a reflective report which includes an evaluation their own teaching session taking into account feedback from students and the teacher (60%)
