Description This module is intended to equip students with the requisite practical skills in the measurement, analysis and reporting of data, appropriate for the work of a reactor physicist. Students are encouraged to show initiative in carrying out a series of nuclear counting experiments using different detector types and in analysing the results. Computing skills, including the use of at least one programming language, are taught in parallel with the laboratory. Students learn several numerical analysis and computational techniques during which design studies are made.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Be aware of the safety hazards in the nuclear reactor environment and adopt appropriate safety precautions;
  • Identify and use various detection systems for ionising radiation;
  • Design experiments to investigate properties of ionising radiation, and carry these out using appropriate detectors and modular electronics;
  • Analyse the results of measurements and compare with theoretical predictions, using appropriate statistical tests;
  • Keep a detailed set of experimental notes;
  • Write a professional laboratory report on their findings;
  • Develop their own computer codes in Fortran to perform simple tasks;
  • Use appropriate numerical methods for solving reactor physics problems, including Monte Carlo and Finite element techniques;
  • Be familiar with word processing, spreadsheets and graphics packages.
